BIMA’s Thirsty Thursdays (or Thirstdays for you efficient types) is a monthly meet up among many of Scotland’s digital marketers and between the chat and the drinks, it’s not to be missed!

When we hosted it this last Thursday at Edinburgh’s own Devil’s Advocate, we thought we’d change it up a bit and take it beyond the usual mingling.

Guests received a ballot with two questions: What is the Most Overhyped Marketing Channel and What is the Sleeping Giant of Digital Marketing? While Moz offers us a look at what marketing managers across other countries are investing in, we’d never before known how we here in Scotland, as a small whole, compare. The results were interesting…

There were a few contenders for Most Overhyped Marketing Channel, with social media and big data both perceived as no more than terms unless they’re understood and measured correctly. There also seems to be a general consensus that SEO, for all the term is tossed around and invested in, does not stand alone but is rather a part of a joined up digital marketing strategy.

But the decision on the Sleeping Giant of Digital Marketing was unanimous: Mobile/Responsive Design is where it’s at. The reasoning for the choice was varied though, from ‘Google care about it and so should we’ (a recurring and frequent theme in digital) to ‘its true value is still not realised’ but everyone agreed that touchscreen devices are changing the way we engage with content, whether we like it or not.

The votes were cast while imbibing at the bar and nibbling on chocolates supplied by our good friends at Hotel Chocolat to help Edinburgh celebrate the launch of the chocolatier’s new cocoa bar and cafe in John Lewis.

A good time was had by all and CEO, Tino Nombro, and new addition and Head of Strategy & Planning, Josh Englander, both said a few words. At the end of the night, one lucky attendee had their ballot plucked at random from the pile to win a voucher to return for yet more drinks and nibbles.
