Want to learn which of your products are bought the most\/least? Would you like to know how many customers decide to drop out at each step of the checkout? Maybe you would like to track the amount of refunds requested to get an idea of which products tend to be returned?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure you would like to know far more related to how your sales are doing in your e-commerce platform. Fear not, in this blog post I intend to familiarise you with the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-manager\/enhanced-ecommerce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enhanced Ecommerce for Google Analytics (EE)<\/a> tool offered through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/analytics\/tag-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Tag Manager (GTM)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Where do we start?<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s start off with some background information. GTM works as a marketing tool that helps manage all tags recording information about your website in one place. All of this is wrapped in a friendly interface (which is especially valuable for those of us with little coding skills).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11471 aligncenter\" src=\"\/wpe-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/analytics-1925495_1920.png\" alt=\"google analytics\" width=\"465\" height=\"349\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In November 2014, Google decided to take a step further in the features offered for tracking e-commerce by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.co.uk\/blog\/15750468-google-rolls-out-enhanced-ecommerce-for-google-analytics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introducing Enhanced Ecommerce for GA<u><\/u><\/a>. This was a breakthrough for the online store sector. It permitted easily gathering data-driven insights about the behaviour of the customers on their online journey to purchase. And all of this for free. But, with great power comes great responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>The deployment of this tool can become a massive task, which makes it far more convenient to deploy it using GTM. By the end of this read I hope I can help you gain a good notion of the EE key features to look out for. Also, I will be providing you with 4 main tips that are signalled as best practices consistently across the different online resource websites.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What do I need to know about Enhanced E-commerce to get me started?<\/h2>\n<h4>1. How to set it up?<\/h4>\n<p>To start off, you need to create a Google Analytics account and enable in the Admin tab &gt; Ecommerce Settings &gt; Enhanced Ecommerce Settings switched ON.<\/p>\n<p>Next, you need to link that GA account to your GTM account (see: <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/6163791?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how to link GA with GTM account<\/a>), so that you ensure that all the information you are recording through tags is then transferred to your GA interface. There, you can produce the relevant associated reports, found in the Conversions tab &gt; E-commerce. The next steps would involve mapping out the information you want to store from your products.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/6163791?hl=en\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11466\" src=\"\/wpe-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/link-gtm-to-ga.jpg\" alt=\"ga link to gtm logo\" width=\"534\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>2. What can I actually track?<\/h4>\n<p>Enhanced Ecommerce supports tracking data about the products viewed (through impressions), added\/removed from the basket or purchased (through product data); about promotions viewed or clicked on (through promotion data); specific actions that we are interested in (through action data) such as monitoring the different shopping stages.<\/p>\n<p>All this data is stored and can then provide information associated with specific actions that we want to track. For example, the primal action any e-commerce business is interested in is measuring purchases and the information associated with it. This feature was present in the traditional e-commerce tool (see <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/1009612?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">e-commerce google guide<\/a>). The tracking of an individual completing a purchase &#8211; and reaching the \u201cThank you\u201d page &#8211; allows to pass information on the product including details such as: brand, category, variant (including colour, size, etc.), price, position, etc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/6014872?hl=en\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11467\" src=\"\/wpe-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/checkout-steps-example.png\" alt=\"shopping behaviour enhanced ecommerce\" width=\"653\" height=\"358\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, EE can do so much more than just tracking a purchase. It can provide information about early stages of a purchase or even track intent from visitors than didn\u2019t even reach the purchase step. It is worth nothing that none of this was possible in the traditional e-commerce tool. The following chart summarises the different events that can be tracked (by order of importance following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lunametrics.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/13\/google-analytics-enhanced-ecommerce-the-order-of-implementation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lunametrics\u2019 blog link guidelines<\/a>). However, it must be noted that this is a general guideline. Make sure you stick to one format for registering your tags, variables and triggers across all the connected platforms (GA and GTM). This makes it easier to efficiently manage the tool, avoiding inconsistencies and data not being transferred properly.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure to <strong>test everything<\/strong> before launching it. The work is not finished after you have defined the different tracking you want to put in place. It is equally important to test everything using the debugger mode (see <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/analyticsjs\/debugging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines for debugging<\/a>) to ensure things run smoothly and it is all running according to what you had laid out.<\/li>\n<li>Be creative. Use <strong>custom dimensions\/metrics<\/strong> to enhance your data collection. This is probably the less important of the four since it goes a bit further than the already extensive possibilities. However, it\u2019s always beneficial to think outside the box, especially if what you need is not covered by the in-built EE tracking options. Some examples of this include custom dimensions like Customer ID, Coupon Code or Availability (<a href=\"http:\/\/online-metrics.com\/enhanced-ecommerce-implementation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See other tips in Online Metrics Blog<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This post is the first on a series of posts under the theme &#8220;Talk data to me&#8221; to be released periodically during the next three months.
