But what does it mean for the rest of us?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What\u2019s happened to Product Listing Ads (PLAs)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In June 2017, The European Commission slapped a record 2.4-billion-euro ($2.8 billion) fine on the world&#8217;s most popular internet search engine.<\/p>\n<p>A result of Google \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9554a8bc-5b12-11e7-b553-e2df1b0c3220\">abusing its dominance in search<\/a>\u00a0by giving preference to its own shopping service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It appears the EU now considers Google Search an essential part of \u201ceveryday life\u201d, so much so that Google are unable to exclusively use its own service.<\/p>\n<p>As an industry, we expected Google to stave off payment via a stance previous deployed: years of expensive litigation.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, From September 2017, Comparison Shopping Engines\/Services (CSEs) such as Kelkoo, Shopzilla and Twenga will be able to run\u00a0product listing ads\u00a0in Google Shopping results, as retailers do.<\/p>\n<p>You can find an example of what that might look like below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11441\" src=\"\/wpe-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/1-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"469\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(This update only affects results in EU countries where Google Shopping is available: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.)<\/p>\n<p>In a stunning move of brilliance, Google have taken a potential loss of market share into an avenue for increased revenue. With Price Comparison Sites and retailers now competing for the same Search\/Shopping real-estate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does this mean for Price Comparison Sites?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Google has long had a turbulent relationship with price comparison services. In March 2016, it shut down its own Google Compare Product to allow greater real estate for its advertising offering.<\/p>\n<p>And before that, in the early days of Google Shopping, removing Price Competitor Sites from its \u201cterms of use\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>So, what can we expect now from Price Comparison Sites?
