On Google, paid ads appear at the top, and organic listings appear underneath, starting with Position 1.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past couple of years, however, Google have rolled out \u201cfeatured snippets\u201d \u2013 those wee bits of information that occasionally pop up at the very top of organic search results.<\/p>\n<p>Featuring so prominently in the SERPs can be a good way to increase click-through rate (CTR) and, in turn, page authority.<\/p>\n<p>But how do featured snippets work and, more importantly, how do you get your site featured?<\/p>\n<p>Sit back, relax, and prepare to see your site soar through the SERPs. This is how to rank Position 0 on Google.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6665 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ambergreeninternetmarketing.com\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/How-to-rank-position-0-on-Google.png\" alt=\"This page teaches you how to rank position 0 on Google\" width=\"647\" height=\"91\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Are Featured Snippets?<\/h3>\n<p>Features snippets are specially marked search results that occasionally appear above other organic results when a user enters a query into Google.<\/p>\n<p>For example, searching for \u201cwhat are featured snippets\u201d produces the following featured snippet:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6666 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ambergreeninternetmarketing.com\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/What-are-featured-snippets-711x800.png\" alt=\"Example of a featured snippet\" width=\"711\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Featured snippets appear below paid results, but there are a few qualities that distinguish featured snippets from the other organic\u00a0results.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A light grey border surrounds the\u00a0result<\/li>\n<li>Keywords are more visibly bolded compared to other results<\/li>\n<li>A large-font excerpt of the page\u2019s copy appears above the URL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the official briefing, see <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/6229325?hl=en-GB\">Google\u2019s resource on featured snippets<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How Do Featured Snippets Work?<\/h3>\n<p>According to Google, featured snippets are programmatically extracted from a webpage. This extract is then enhanced to draw users\u2019 attention.<\/p>\n<p>Featured snippets are not part of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/guides\/enhance-site\">Knowledge Graph<\/a><\/span>. They are simply normal search results, emphasised with a special layout.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for webmasters, it\u2019s not possible to mark your page as a featured snippet. You can, however, opt out of featured snippets by using the &lt;meta name=&#8221;googlebot&#8221; content=&#8221;nosnippet&#8221;&gt; tag on your page.<\/p>\n<p>Opting out might be useful if you already rank in the top spots for your target keywords and those keywords are more informational than transactional. In these cases, you might already receive\u00a0a good amount of traffic and domain authority. Great! But if you\u2019re History.com, will you be getting the same click through rate as before? While no two snippets are identical, here are some important themes they learned during their analysis:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In order to become a featured snippet, the result must already rank on Page 1<\/li>\n<li>Only 1\/3 of featured snippets are pulled from the Positon 1 result<\/li>\n<li>Featured snippets are about relevance, not authority<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Consider the featured snippet in the image above. The Positon 1 result belongs to Google, the official source on this particular query. The actual featured snippet, however, is pulled from the Position 4 result.<\/p>\n<p>So, what is the best way to rank Position 0 on Google? Write clear, relevant copy, and phrase it in the most user-friendly, straightforward way possible. That\u2019s why this Position 4 result beat out Google itself for the number 1 \u2013 well, 0 \u2013 spot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Our Experience with Featured Snippets<\/h3>\n<p>We wrote a blog back in June on the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ambergreeninternetmarketing.com\/blog\/10-benefits-of-user-generated-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">benefits of user-generated content<\/a><\/u>. A few weeks ago, we were delighted to see that the page, which ranked Position 3, had become a featured snippet!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6672 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ambergreeninternetmarketing.com\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Featured-snippet-example-1-800x715.png\" alt=\"Our featured snippet\" width=\"800\" height=\"715\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Reading the excerpt, you can probably tell why: the copy is clear, relevant, and doesn\u2019t beat around the bush. We also didn\u2019t try to manufacture the result \u2013 it just happened organically.<\/p>\n<p>But as the clich\u00e9 suggests, our fifteen minutes of fame didn\u2019t last forever. As of writing, the results have changed:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6673 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ambergreeninternetmarketing.com\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Featured-snippet-example_2-1-788x800.png\" alt=\"The featured snippet which replaced ours\" width=\"788\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although we\u2019ve moved up a notch from Position 3 to Position 2, we no longer hold Position 0. That distinction now belongs to the Position 4 result.<\/p>\n<p>But why? Perhaps their post has enjoyed an influx of inbound links recently, or it has seen a rise in CTR.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps it\u2019s simply more relevant for this particular search query. No matter how hard marketers try, there is no single tactic to help you gain featured snippet status.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>In Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>Since featured snippets are programmatically excerpted from webpages by Google, they can change at any time.<\/p>\n<p>As a marketer, there\u2019s no guaranteed way to reach Position 0. Instead, strive to create content that\u2019s focused on answering a specific question or challenge.
