Chances are, a lot of those emails are never even opened.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s a newsletter, announcement, offer, or event invite, your subject line is arguably the most important part of any email you send out. According to Convince &amp; Convert, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.convinceandconvert.com\/digital-marketing\/email-marketing-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">35% of recipients open emails based on subject line alone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you write email subject lines that get your message across while also capturing your recipients\u2019 interest and inspiring the all-important click to open? We have a few tips to try out as you start drafting your next email marketing campaign:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h2>Keep it conversational<\/h2>\n<p>Technical industry jargon can be important depending on your audience, but generally the subject line isn\u2019t the place for it. If your subject line is too technical, it might go over some recipients\u2019 heads; they\u2019ll just gloss over your email and move on to the next. Exactly what you don\u2019t want!<\/p>\n<p>To keep the subject line both light and informative, consider these approaches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use humour (if it fits):<\/strong> Who doesn\u2019t love a chuckle while they tackle their inbox? Take this example from Groupon: \u201cDeals That Make Us Proud (Unlike Our Nephew, Steve)\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make it a list:<\/strong> Numbers tend to catch people\u2019s eye and appeal to their curiosity. For example, if you\u2019re promoting a webinar, introduce the topic with something like: \u201c5 ways to improve your website\u2019s UX\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask a question: <\/strong>Target the right people with an inquiry that piques their interest. For example, send an offer reminder with the subject line: \u201cHave you redeemed your 20% off coupon yet?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h2>Stay positive with strategic word choice<\/h2>\n<p>Since there isn\u2019t much space to get your message across, every word counts\u2014and you want to choose words that appeal to recipients\u2019 emotions. If you\u2019re promoting a new <a href=\"\/en-gb\/discover\/white-papers\/\">white paper<\/a> or want people to sign up for a webinar, tap into FOMO.<\/p>\n<p>Convey excitement and exclusivity with positive words like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alert<\/li>\n<li>Available<\/li>\n<li>New<\/li>\n<li>Introducing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Create a sense of urgency with words and phrases like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Today only<\/li>\n<li>Now<\/li>\n<li>Before it\u2019s gone<\/li>\n<li>Expiring soon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/optinmonster.com\/101-email-subject-lines-your-subscribers-cant-resist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a number of studies<\/a> that have tried to narrow down the most successful subject line keywords but ultimately the words that will work best for you will depend on your industry, your target audience, and the goal of your campaign. Above all, your subject line should accurately depict what users are going to find when they <a href=\"\/en-gb\/blog\/re-how-to-stop-sending-terrible-emails\/\">open the email.<\/a> So, aim to be informative and descriptive, with a little splash of personality.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h2>Save the details<\/h2>\n<p>The subject line is not the place to cram in every single detail. You want it to catch a recipient\u2019s eye and intrigue them enough to open and find out more. If you give everything away in the subject line, your open rates will plummet.<\/p>\n<p>Brevity is also important in a technical sense. For mobile in particular, you want to make sure the most important parts aren\u2019t getting cut off, so make your point as early in the subject line as you can. Most subject lines don\u2019t need to be over 50 characters; if you can get your point across in 20-40 characters, even better.<\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t fit everything you&#8217;d like into the subject line, the pre-header, also known as preview text, is the perfect place to include a little more context.
