We were getting bored of the old guard anyway\u2026 Facebook is so pass\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok is the shiny new thing, and for good reason. Here are the key facts you need to know:<\/p>\n<h2>What is TikTok?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A short-form <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5583700\/china-tech-tiktok-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video-sharing app<\/a>, available in over 150 markets and in 75 languages, driven by an increasingly global community of young, eclectic, and creative users (think GenZ\u2014teens to mid-twenties).<\/li>\n<li>Over 500 million monthly active users. (For reference, that\u2019s about half of Instagram\u2019s user count.)<\/li>\n<li>The app was launched for markets outside of China by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ByteDance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ByteDance<\/a> in 2017. ByteDance previously launched Douyin, which uses the same software as TikTok, for the Chinese market in 2016.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43019\" src=\"\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/19Q2-Creative-Blog-DAC-TikTok-Body-Image-1.jpg\" alt=\"TikTok app features\" width=\"860\" height=\"430\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Is TikTok the new Vine?<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re thinking, \u201cHey, this thing sounds like Vine!\u201d, the US-based short-form video app that had a loud debut and a quiet death, you\u2019re not far off. Vine, acquired by Twitter in 2012 prior to its official launch, was also popular with younger audiences who used it to create music shorts and comedy clips. The platform grew to 200 million active users at one point, with brands scrambling to get in on the action, only to be <a href=\"https:\/\/econsultancy.com\/how-vine-lost-its-edge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shut down<\/a> by Twitter four years later, partially due to growing competition from Instagram and Snapchat.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are three notable differences between the two platforms as it stands:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>TikTok&#8217;s monthly active users are more than double Vine\u2019s at its peak, and still growing.<\/li>\n<li>ByteDance has deep pockets\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/10\/26\/chinas-bytedance-leapfrogs-uber-to-becomes-worlds-most-valuable-startup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> have listed it as one of the world\u2019s most valuable startups.<\/li>\n<li>Perhaps most critical is timing. Video as a content type is not only now well-established, it is hugely popular. Business is booming.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Who is on TikTok?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>GenZ. Over 40% of users are between the age of 16-24. Anything short and entertaining\u2014music, lip-syncing, dancing, comedy, skits, animals.<\/li>\n<li>TikTok\u2019s differentiator is its range of video tools, effects, and filters, as well as audio to video syncing.<\/li>\n<li>Creation is kept within its own walls (unlike Facebook or YouTube, who rely on third-party apps).<\/li>\n<li>Self-expression comes above all else on this platform, unlike other social channels, where \u201cstaying in touch with friends\u201d is the key factor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43025\" src=\"\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/19Q2-Creative-Blog-DAC-TikTok-Body-Image-2.jpg\" alt=\"TikTok app screenshots\" width=\"860\" height=\"430\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What does TikTok mean for brands?<\/h2>\n<p>Of course, marketers want in. There is already a growing chorus online providing their POV on what to do with it all (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/news\/2019\/05\/31\/unlocking-tiktok-how-marketers-are-experimenting-with-the-video-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/marketing\/tiktok-tells-advertisers-interest-based-targeting-is-coming-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbesagencycouncil\/2019\/06\/17\/is-tiktok-the-next-big-thing-in-influencer-marketing\/#20e6ff8c13ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>). TikTok doesn\u2019t have the ad offerings of platforms like Instagram, but it is moving towards monetisation, measurement, and targeting options and has started testing native ads. So far, it has run a number of test campaigns\u2014most notably with Guess in a #InMyDenim challenge, which also featured influencers. Brands like Pepsi and Snapdeal have also signed on to advertise.<\/p>\n<p>For brands that want to reap the benefits of being early adopters before the space becomes saturated and costs inevitably rise, TikTok accounts can be easily set up and partnerships built with influencers directly\u2014the same way they do on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat. The most important things to consider? Audience alignment (consider this demographic and your message), creative treatment (be creative to cut through), and have a clear <a href=\"\/en-gb\/services\/content-strategy\/\">content strategy<\/a> tied to business objectives. However, a few aspects set it apart from others before it. TikTok has seen <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/06\/14\/tiktok-hit-9m-in-in-app-purchases-last-month-up-500-over-last-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1.2 billion installs<\/a> so far, up from a billion at the end of 2018\u2014and while it is only now making news in western countries, it already has a solid foundation in Asia. It currently ranks higher than Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat, and Pinterest for active monthly users. With a company recently valued at $75 billion steering the ship, TikTok has some serious capital behind it.
