{"id":101862,"date":"2014-07-31T17:35:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-31T22:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dacgroup.com\/google-authorship-serp-personalisation-current-state-play\/"},"modified":"2024-12-19T16:40:17","modified_gmt":"2024-12-19T21:40:17","slug":"google-authorship-serp-personalisation-current-state-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dacgroup.com\/en-gb\/insights\/blog\/search-optimization\/google-authorship-serp-personalisation-current-state-play\/","title":{"rendered":"Google+, Authorship and SERP Personalisation: The Current State of Play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Late last month, Google\u2019s John Mueller announced that they planned to alter how Authorship was displayed in the SERPs.\u00a0 His original post can be seen below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.make-it-rain.co.uk\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-07-31-at-10.52.15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5586 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.make-it-rain.co.uk\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-07-31-at-10.52.15.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-07-31 at 10.52.15\" width=\"439\" height=\"415\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">There has been a lot of back and forth, conjecture and even arguments regarding this change, about the reasons behind it <em>(like many monopolies, Google doesn&#8217;t always tell its subjects the complete truth)<\/em> as well as what this will mean for authors going forward.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">It has caused such contention because many of us had spent considerable time and resources building up our profiles, hoping our smiling, passport-style faces would attract more clicks.\u00a0 And for a while they did! In<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/google-author-photos\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">a study<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">by Cyrus Shepard of Moz, he showed us that by simply optimising his Google+ picture, he increased organic traffic by a whopping 35%!\u00a0<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #7c7c7c;\"><b>What\u2019s changed?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">Despite Google\u2019s announcement, the more observant among you may have noticed that there are still photos dotted sporadically throughout search results. If you look below, you can see some results I was returned for the query, \u2018blogging strategies.\u2019<\/span> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.make-it-rain.co.uk\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/BloggingStrategiesLogginIn1-e1406800858131.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5572\" src=\"http:\/\/www.make-it-rain.co.uk\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/BloggingStrategiesLogginIn1-e1406800858131.png\" alt=\"BloggingStrategiesLogginIn\" width=\"450\" height=\"543\" \/><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">The above screenshot was taken while I was logged into my Google+ account. Entering the same query while using Incognito mode, not only returns fairly different results but is completely faceless. No author photos at all.\u00a0 This difference gives us insight into Google\u2019s intentions.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">On Google+, I am connected to the two authors whose pictures are shown in these results.\u00a0 I am not connected to the two whose faces are not shown (highlighted in green). <em>I will come back to these guys later. <\/em><\/span> <span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">What this tells us is that Google is trying to <strong>serve us up results from people we know and interact with<\/strong> (using their social network).\u00a0 This falls in line with the search engine\u2019s drive for a more personalised web. The search engine assumes that those I am connected to on Google+ are those from whom I want to hear most.\u00a0 This does make sense!<\/span> <span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The importance of Google+<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">At this point, it is necessary to point out that the aforementioned results (with the Authorship photos) are not leading to author-written articles.\u00a0 They are simple posts on Google+, some containing links to other sites and some not.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\"><strong>It seems that while a person is logged into their Google account,\u00a0a large portion of the SERP real estate is dominated by relevant Google+ posts.\u00a0<\/strong> The search engine is promoting content from its own network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">Another way that Google+ is being featured in SERPs is through <strong>\u2018sharing information.\u2019\u00a0<\/strong> Below is a screenshot of three results from my query \u2018Google+ in SERPs\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\"><a style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.make-it-rain.co.uk\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Google+SERPs-e1406799966725.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5575 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.make-it-rain.co.uk\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Google+SERPs-e1406799966725.png\" alt=\"Google+SERPs\" width=\"550\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">None of the three results displayed are Google+ posts but the search engine is still offering up information from my G+ connections, to liven up the results and breathe life into its all-important SERPs.<em> This type of &#8216;sharing information&#8217; They\u2019ve lost their picture and Circle information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">Using the same search query, \u2018blogging strategies\u2019 in Incognito mode shows us the prevalence of authored posts in SERPs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\"><a style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.make-it-rain.co.uk\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-07-30-at-15.39.191.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5573\" src=\"http:\/\/www.make-it-rain.co.uk\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-07-30-at-15.39.191.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-07-30 at 15.39.19\" width=\"533\" height=\"558\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">We can see that the top four results are all authored posts.\u00a0 While many SEO authorities still argue that Authorship is not used by Google as a direct ranking metric, through online PR, social branding, authority and increased CTR and exposure, it at the very least helps results climb SERPs indirectly. Authorship, without doubt, <em>heavily<\/em>\u00a0<em>influences<\/em> ranking! \u00a0And again, when signed in, posts associated with your connections will appear higher. \u00a0Authorship is a no brainer!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #7c7c7c;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Moving forward<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">Over the past month, there have been a huge amount of posts discussing relevance of Google Authorship.\u00a0 Is it worth the time and effort?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">The answer is undoubtedly yes.\u00a0 Despite having its most obvious benefits disappear (the visual stimuli within the result pages), <strong>connecting content to people is vital in Google\u2019s vision of a personalised web.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">Test whether your Authorship is running correctly with:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/webmasters\/tools\/richsnippets\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Authorship Testing Tool<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">This idea is supported by the growing presence of Google+ in search results.\u00a0 The network is very much at the heart of Authorship and the connection between content and writers mirrors the human connections Google is also trying to push in its SERPs, as demonstrated earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #7c7c7c;\">To take advantage of the influx of Google+ real estate in search, the technique is simple.\u00a0<strong> Build up your Google+ connections! Brands should aim to increase their follower counts and encourage employees to do the same on their own\/professional profiles.\u00a0<\/strong>The more plussers in the networks to which you have access, the more widely your Google+ posts will appear across the search engine.
