Although people have become increasingly wary of how their data is harvested, they&#8217;re rarely willing to pay for ad-free website access. Advertisers, for their part, still require access to user data to justify their gargantuan spending in digital channels\u2014spending that supports the continued existence of the free web as we know it.<\/p>\n<p>With no consensus between major players and consumer interest groups, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/products\/ads\/next-steps-transparency-choice-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google this week announced that they are developing a Privacy Sandbox<\/a> they hope will give users more insight into and control over the ways their data is used in digital advertising. It&#8217;s an open invitation to <a href=\"https:\/\/services.google.com\/fb\/forms\/adstransparencychoiceandcontrol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submit feedback and recommendations<\/a> so the industry can come together and decide upon a mutually acceptable code of conduct.<\/p>\n<p>Lending credence to their famous &#8220;Don&#8217;t be evil&#8221; mantra, Google&#8217;s initial outlines are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Users should have transparency\n<ul>\n<li>They should understand how their data is being collected and used for ads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Users should have choice\n<ul>\n<li>Their choices about how they experience the web should be respected and any attempts to bypass those choices should be prevented<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Users should have control\n<ul>\n<li>They should have the ability to adjust how their data is collected and used to tailor the ads they see<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Hey Google, why now?<\/h2>\n<p>The inescapable fact that users don&#8217;t like the idea of being tracked has led to the stratospheric rise of ad blockers and a growing trend of declining advertising cookies. Major vendors have also erred on the side of privacy over the years, including Apple and its <a href=\"\/blog\/apple-update-subvert-safaris-tracking-rules-and-youll-be-treated-as-malware\/\">recent changes to Safari&#8217;s anti-tracking rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44104\" src=\"\/wpe-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/clear-cookies.jpg\" alt=\"Chrome dialog box to delete browsing history\" width=\"860\" height=\"430\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are, of course, illicit ways to bypass such privacy measures\u2014either by masking third-party cookies as first-party, or even going so far as to compile a digital &#8220;fingerprint&#8221; using consented data. These fingerprints are compiled from information the user doesn&#8217;t necessarily know they&#8217;re offering up, from device type to fonts installed. So, even if a user has blocked cookies, advertisers can still use these insights to offer personalized content. This invariably reduces performance and sometimes leads to reduced advertising spends or advertising stopping altogether\u2014which doesn&#8217;t bode well for the future of the free web.
